This past September we hit a tipping point. With 2 kids in one room (bunk beds) for 2 years we all needed a break. I have one child that falls asleep easily and one that never sleeps. The one that never sleeps especially enjoys keeping the "good sleeper" awake and wired. We decided to separate the kids for a semester. And give them a break.
We moved our bed into the living room and threw out our old couch. We moved "the sleeper" into our den (aka our old bedroom). It was wonderful to have early silence in the evening. And although one child was still awake too late in the night, he seemed to settle down sooner and have more down time before he drifted off.
Flash forward 4 months, the kids did miss one another after a while. It was difficult for us to watch Walking Dead with only a curtain between us and our 6 year old. The downsides to the shift began to outweigh the benefits. Our lack of privacy and loss of common family space proved to be too much. We endured through Christmas but it's time to get our own space back.
